Therapy for Grief & Loss in Niagara Region and Virtually
Province Wide: Navigating Loss with Compassion

Grief is a natural response to loss, yet it can feel overwhelming, isolating, and unpredictable. Whether you are mourning the loss of a loved one, a relationship, a job, a sense of identity, or life as you once knew it, grief can impact emotions, thoughts, and daily life in profound ways.

At Wellness Counselling Centre, we provide compassionate, evidence-based grief therapy to help individuals process loss, honour their emotions, and find ways to move forward while still holding space for what they’ve lost.

Understanding Grief & Loss

Grief is not just about sadness—it can involve a range of emotions, thoughts, and physical sensations. Some types of grief include:

  • Acute Grief – The immediate emotional pain and distress following a loss

  • Complicated Grief – Grief that feels prolonged, overwhelming, or difficult to process

  • Anticipatory Grief – The experience of mourning before a loss occurs (e.g., terminal illness, life transitions)

  • Disenfranchised Grief – Loss that may not be recognized or validated by others (e.g., loss of a pet, estranged relationships, miscarriage, infertility)

  • Cumulative Grief – Grieving multiple losses over time, making each new loss feel heavier

  • Ambiguous Grief – Grieving a loss that is unclear, unresolved, or ongoing, such as a loved one with dementia, addiction, or estrangement

  • Oscillating Grief – Moving between intense grief and moments of adjusting to daily life, often seen in long-term grieving processes

There is no "right" way to grieve, and the process looks different for everyone. Some people feel waves of sadness, while others experience anger, numbness, relief, guilt, or even confusion. All feelings are valid.

Signs That Grief May Be Impacting Your Life

  • Feeling emotionally overwhelmed or numb

  • Experiencing difficulty concentrating or making decisions

  • Changes in sleep or appetite

  • Feeling disconnected or withdrawn from others

  • Experiencing guilt, regret, or unresolved emotions

  • Struggling with anxiety or fear about the future

  • Feeling stuck, as though healing isn’t possible

Grief does not follow a set timeline, and healing does not mean forgetting—it means learning how to carry loss in a way that allows you to keep living.
