ADHD (Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder) is much more than difficulty focusing—it directly impacts executive functioning, time management, emotional regulation, and self-esteem. While ADHD presents unique daily challenges, it also comes with incredible strengths, such as creativity, high energy, and the ability to think outside the box.
At Wellness Counselling Centre, we provide evidence-based therapy to help clients of all ages understand the ADHD brain, develop practical strategies, and embrace their unique strengths.
Understanding the ADHD Brain: How It May Show Up
ADHD is a unique neurodevelopmental blueprint that affects how the brain processes information, time, and energy. It typically presents in one of three ways:
-
Predominantly Inattentive: Difficulty focusing, forgetfulness, disorganization, and trouble following through on tasks.
-
Predominantly Hyperactive-Impulsive: Physical restlessness, difficulty sitting still, fidgeting, and impulsive decision-making.
-
Combined Type: A mix of both inattentiveness and hyperactivity/impulsivity.
-
The Family Connection: ADHD is highly hereditary, with a 70% to 80% heritability rate. It is incredibly common for parents to discover their own ADHD only after their child is diagnosed, allowing families to learn and grow together.
Noticing the Impact: Signs It is Time for Support
ADHD symptoms manifest differently depending on age and relationship dynamics. You might recognize these patterns in your daily life:
In Adults:
-
The "Time Blindness" Cycle: Chronic procrastination, losing track of time, and missing deadlines despite your best efforts.
-
ADHD Paralysis: Feeling so mentally and physically exhausted by a long to-do list that you feel completely frozen.
-
Emotional Storms: Intense frustration, rapid mood shifts, and a deep, painful sensitivity to criticism or rejection (rejection sensitive dysphoria).
In Couples:
-
The Manager-Helper Dynamic: Partners fall into an unbalanced pattern where one person feels responsible for organizing and reminding, while the other feels micromanaged or criticized, leading to a loss of connection and intimacy.
-
Spousal Burnout: The non-ADHD partner experiences severe exhaustion from carrying an unequal share of the daily logistics and mental load, while the ADHD partner feels overwhelmed by trying to meet expectations.
In Children & Youth:
-
Task Avoidance: Extreme difficulty starting or finishing schoolwork and chores, often mistaken for "laziness."
-
Impulsive Reactions: Interrupting others, lying, difficulty waiting turns, or acting without thinking.
-
Frequent Meltdowns: Intense frustration and difficulty calming down when sensory or emotional overwhelm hits.

We help partners end the blame cycle, understand how ADHD impacts communication, and build practical, balanced systems to share household and mental loads
-
-

We provide concrete parenting strategies, support co-regulation, and help families reduce daily friction while boosting their child's self-esteem.
-
Our Therapeutic Toolkit
We integrate specialised, evidence-based therapies tailored to how the ADHD brain processes information, emotions, and relationships:
-
Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT): To reframe self-critical thoughts, manage procrastination, and build organizational habits.
-
Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT): To teach concrete distress tolerance, impulse control, and emotional regulation skills.
-
The Gottman Method (for Couples & Parenting): To help couples break defensive communication patterns and rebuild intimacy. We also use Gottman's Emotion Coaching principles to help parents support their child’s emotional development and co-regulation.
-
Internal Family Systems (IFS): To explore and heal the "parts" of you that feel stuck, overwhelmed, or highly self-critical.
-
Play & Art Therapy: To engage children and youth in creative, developmentally appropriate ways to express emotions and build focus.
Whatever your are facing, there is a place to start.
If navigating ADHD has left you feeling overwhelmed, or if you are a partner or parent carrying the weight of family burnout, you do not have to navigate this alone.
