Disclaimer: The information on this page is for educational purposes only and is not intended to diagnose any mental health or neurodevelopmental condition. If you are seeking support for your child or teenager, our team is here to help you understand their developmental needs and build practical strategies for emotional regulation and family connection.

Growing up presents unique challenges at every developmental stage. Children and youth do not always have the language to express when they are struggling; instead, their distress often shows up in their behaviors, school performance, sleep, or relationships. Whether your child is navigating intense worries, behavioral changes, academic stress, or identity development, they do not have to navigate it alone.

At Wellness Counselling Centre, we provide a safe, engaging, and developmentally appropriate space to help children and youth understand their emotions, build resilience, and strengthen their connection with their families.

Understanding the Stages:
How We Support
Different Age Groups

Children and teenagers process the world differently depending on their cognitive, social, and emotional development. We tailor our therapeutic approach to match your child’s specific developmental stage:

  • Early Childhood (Ages 6–9): At this stage, children process their world primarily through play, imagination, and action rather than abstract conversation. Therapy focuses on emotional identification, basic self-regulation, and behavioral support, heavily involving parents to build a secure home environment.

  • Pre-Teens & Tweens (Ages 10–13): This transitional phase involves rapid brain development, shifting social dynamics, and the early stages of independence. Therapy helps tweens navigate peer relationships, academic pressure, and changing bodies, while equipping them with concrete coping skills to manage anxiety and mood fluctuations.

  • Adolescents & Teens (Ages 14–17): Teenagers are actively developing their identity, autonomy, and values. Therapy provides a confidential, non-judgmental space to process complex peer dynamics, academic stress, identity, and future transitions, focusing on self-advocacy and emotional regulation.

Noticing the Signs: When to Seek Support

In alignment with clinical frameworks (such as DSM-5 neurodevelopmental, anxiety, depressive, and disruptive, impulse-control, and conduct disorders), emotional distress in youth can manifest in various ways depending on their age:

In Children (Ages 6–9):

  • Regression: Returning to earlier behaviors, such as bedwetting, thumb-sucking, or extreme clinginess.

  • Physical Complaints: Frequent stomach aches, headaches, or nausea, particularly before school or separation from caregivers.

  • Behavioural Outbursts: Uncharacteristic tantrums, aggression, or difficulty calming down when frustrated.

  • Sleep Disruptions: Frequent nightmares, fear of the dark, or difficulty sleeping alone.

In Tweens & Teens (Ages 10–17):

  • Self-Harm & Maladaptive Coping: Engaging in non-suicidal self-injury (such as cutting, burning, or severe scratching) as a way to cope with overwhelming emotional pain or numbness.

  • Risky or Impulsive Behaviours: Engaging in unsafe behaviors, substance experimentation, reckless device/internet use, or running away.

  • Social Withdrawal: Pulling away from friends, family, and activities they used to enjoy.

  • Academic Decline: A sudden drop in grades, school avoidance, or intense anxiety surrounding performance.

  • Irritability & Mood Shifts: Expressing sadness or anxiety through chronic irritability, defiance, or sudden emotional outbursts.

Healing and Rebuilding: Our Approach to Therapy

We believe that lasting change happens when therapy supports both the child and the family system.

  • For the Child/Youth:

    • We focus on building a trusting, secure relationship where they feel safe to express themselves, learn how their brain and body respond to stress, and practice concrete coping skills to replace harmful behaviours with safe alternatives.

    For the Parents & Caregivers:

    • We do not work with children in isolation. We partner with you to provide parent coaching, safety planning, co-regulation strategies, and tools to help you support your child's emotional growth at home.

    For Couples:

    • We help partners navigate the impact of illness on their relationship, establishing healthy boundaries, sharing the emotional load, and rebuilding connection.

    For the Family System:

    • We help families improve communication, break cycles of conflict, and rebuild secure attachment bonds so that home feels like a safe harbour.

Our Therapeutic Toolkit

To meet your child or teen at their specific developmental level, some of the modalities we use include:

  • Attachment-Informed Therapy: Focuses on strengthening the emotional bond between parent and child, creating a secure base from which the child can explore the world and manage stress.

  • Play Therapy (Ages 6–9): Uses the natural language of play to help younger children express feelings, process difficult experiences, and develop problem-solving skills.

  • Expressive Arts Therapy: Offers a creative, non-verbal outlet for children and teens to explore complex emotions, identity, and stress through art-making and creative expression.

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT): Helps older children and teens identify, challenge, and reframe unhelpful or anxious thought patterns that contribute to worry and low mood.

  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) Skills: The gold standard for addressing self-harm and impulsivity. It teaches teens concrete distress tolerance, mindfulness, and emotional regulation skills to navigate intense emotions and interpersonal conflict safely.

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT): Helps teens clarify their personal values and take committed action toward who they want to be, even in the face of anxiety and self-doubt.

Whatever your are facing, there is a place to start.

If your child or teenager is struggling, or if you are a parent carrying the weight of family burnout and worry, you do not have to navigate this alone.
