Disclaimer: The information on this page is for educational purposes only. If you are navigating the lingering effects of a distressing or overwhelming event, our team is here to provide a safe, confidential space to help you process your experiences and restore a sense of safety.

Experiencing trauma can profoundly alter how you perceive yourself, relate to others, and navigate the world. Whether the distressing event occurred recently or is rooted in your past, its impact can linger in your mind and body, shaping your emotions, your relationships, and your daily life.

Trauma is not defined by the event itself, but rather by how your nervous system responds to it. When an experience—or a series of experiences—overwhelms your natural capacity to cope, your body can get stuck in a survival loop. You do not need a formal diagnosis of PTSD to experience post-traumatic stress; the lingering weight of an unresolved, overwhelming event is a valid and common human response.

At Wellness Counselling Centre, we provide evidence-based, trauma-informed therapy to help you safely process your experiences, regulate your nervous system, and reclaim a sense of safety, control, and connection.

Understanding Trauma: The Forms of
Post-Traumatic Stress

Trauma can stem from a wide range of life events. Because everyone processes distress differently, post-traumatic stress can manifest through various types of experiences:

  • Acute Trauma: Resulting from a single, highly distressing event, such as a motor vehicle accident, a physical assault, a natural disaster, or a sudden, unexpected loss.

  • Chronic Trauma: Arising from repeated, ongoing exposure to highly stressful situations, such as domestic abuse, long-term bullying, chronic illness, or systemic discrimination.

  • Complex Trauma: Developing from exposure to multiple, repetitive, or prolonged traumatic events—often relational in nature and occurring during childhood—such as developmental neglect, abandonment, or early abuse.

Noticing the Signs: How Trauma Lives in the Body and Mind

Trauma is a whole-body experience. When a distressing event is not fully processed, the survival energy remains trapped in your autonomic nervous system. You might recognise these signs of post-traumatic stress in your daily life:

In Your Body & Mind:

  • Nervous System Dysregulation: Feeling constantly on edge, easily startled, irritable, or hypervigilant (scanning your environment for danger), or conversely, feeling flat, numb, exhausted, and emotionally shut down.

  • Intrusive Symptoms: Experiencing sudden, unwanted memories, vivid flashbacks, or distressing nightmares related to the event, making you feel as though it is happening in the present moment.

  • Avoidance: Going to great lengths to avoid places, people, conversations, or thoughts that remind you of the distressing experience.

  • Somatic Distress: Experiencing chronic muscle tension, headaches, digestive issues, or fatigue that does not seem to have a clear medical cause.

In Relationships & Families:

  • Trust and Intimacy Barriers: Struggling to feel safe opening up to others, anticipating betrayal or rejection, or isolating yourself to protect against hurt.

  • Emotional Flooding: Experiencing sudden, intense waves of anger, fear, or sadness that feel difficult to manage or communicate to those around you.

Healing and Rebuilding: Our Approach to Therapy

Healing from trauma is not about forgetting what happened; it is about helping your brain and body understand that the danger has passed and you are safe in the present. In therapy, you can expect:

  • A Gentle, Self-Paced Environment: Your therapy will never push you to talk about details before you are ready. You control the pace of your healing process.

  • Nervous System Grounding: Learning practical somatic and sensory tools to help calm your body when you feel triggered, anxious, or emotionally flooded.

  • Dismantling Shame and Self-Blame: Processing the heavy feelings of guilt, regret, or shame that often follow traumatic events, replacing them with self-compassion and understanding.

  • Reclaiming Your Narrative: Helping you make sense of what happened, allowing you to integrate the experience into your life story without letting it define your future.

Our Therapeutic Toolkit

To support your recovery, our clinicians draw from a diverse range of research-backed, trauma-informed modalities that address both the mind and the body:

  • Somatic & Sensorimotor Psychotherapy: Focuses on releasing the physical survival energy (fight, flight, or freeze) trapped in the body, helping your nervous system return to a state of calm.

  • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing): A gold-standard trauma therapy that uses bilateral stimulation to help your brain reprocess distressing memories, reducing their emotional and physical charge.

  • SITCAP (Structured Sensory Intervention): A sensory-based framework that allows you to safely externalise and process the traumatic details of an experience through visual and somatic exercises.

  • Internal Family Systems (IFS): Explores the internal "parts" of your personality that have been impacted by trauma—such as the hypervigilant protector, the part that numbs the pain, or the inner critic—fostering inner harmony.

  • Narrative Therapy: Helps you externalise your trauma, allowing you to reframe your personal history and write a self-empowered narrative where you are the survivor, not the victim.

  • Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) Skills: Teaches concrete distress tolerance, emotional regulation, and mindfulness skills to help you manage intense emotional waves.

  • Art Therapy: Provides a creative, non-verbal outlet to express and process complex emotions and memories when words feel entirely inadequate.

Whatever your are facing, there is a place to start.

Healing from post-traumatic stress is possible, and your nervous system has an innate capacity to restore its balance. Whether your experience happened recently or has been carried in silence for years, we are here to walk alongside you with gentle, steady support.
