Somatic Psychotherapy:
Healing Through the Mind-Body Connection

Somatic Psychotherapy, developed through the pioneering work of Dr. Peter Levine and others in the field of body-based trauma recovery, is a therapeutic approach that integrates the body, mind, and nervous system. It recognizes that trauma is often stored in the body—not just in the mind—and that healing involves listening to, regulating, and reconnecting with the body’s signals.

At Wellness Counselling Centre, we integrate somatic practices to help clients feel grounded, safe, and present, supporting lasting healing from the inside out.

How Somatic Psychotherapy Can Help

Somatic psychotherapy helps clients:

  • Regulate the nervous system and reduce chronic stress

  • Increase awareness of bodily cues connected to emotion

  • Release trauma responses held in the body (fight, flight, freeze, or fawn)

  • Develop tools for grounding, breathwork, and self-regulation

  • Rebuild a sense of trust and safety within the body

  • Address chronic tension, pain, or dissociation related to trauma

This approach empowers individuals to reconnect with their bodies as allies in healing, rather than sources of overwhelm.

Who Can Benefit from Somatic Psychotherapy

Somatic psychotherapy may be especially supportive for:

  • Adults and youth who have experienced trauma, chronic stress, or emotional overwhelm

  • Individuals struggling with anxiety, panic, or dissociation

  • Clients who feel disconnected from their bodies or experience somatic symptoms like tension or fatigue

  • People recovering from abuse, medical trauma, or high-stress environments

  • Anyone seeking a more embodied, integrative approach to emotional healing

Somatic therapy is gentle, respectful, and always led at your pace.

What to Expect in Somatic Psychotherapy

In somatic therapy, you’ll learn to notice how your body holds and responds to emotions. Sessions may include:

  • Mindful body scans to identify areas of tension, energy, or stillness

  • Breathwork and grounding exercises for emotional regulation

  • Movement or posture awareness to release held stress

  • Guided imagery or visualizations for calming the nervous system

  • Processing emotions and memories in a way that includes body awareness

You’ll never be asked to do anything that feels unsafe or overwhelming—your sense of safety and control always comes first.

Our Approach to Somatic Psychotherapy

At Wellness Counselling Centre, somatic psychotherapy is often woven together with:

  • Sensorimotor Psychotherapy – A structured body-based trauma approach

  • Mindfulness-Based Therapy – Supporting present-moment awareness and regulation

  • Narrative Therapy – Integrating body memory with personal meaning

  • Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) – Linking physical cues with thoughts and behaviours

  • Trauma-Informed Therapy – Ensuring that all interventions prioritize emotional safety

We honour the body as a source of insight, healing, and resilience.

Come Home to Your Body

Somatic Psychotherapy helps you reconnect with yourself—not just in thought, but in breath, body, and being—offering a path toward deeper healing and lasting calm.
