Complex Trauma (C-PTSD)

Complex Trauma Therapy in Niagara Region and Virtually
Province Wide: Healing Deep Wounds

Complex Trauma (C-PTSD) occurs when an individual experiences repeated or prolonged trauma, often in relationships where safety and trust should exist. Unlike single-event trauma, complex trauma can shape a person’s sense of self, relationships, and emotional responses.

At Wellness Counselling Centre, we provide specialized therapy to help individuals heal from deep emotional wounds, regain self-worth, and rebuild a life beyond survival mode.

What Is Complex Trauma?

Complex Trauma is often caused by:

  • Childhood abuse or neglect

  • Domestic violence

  • Long-term emotional or psychological abuse

  • Trafficking or exploitation

  • Growing up in chaotic, unpredictable environments

Because the trauma is ongoing, individuals may develop survival-based coping mechanisms that continue into adulthood, affecting relationships, self-esteem, and emotional regulation..

Signs Of Complex Trauma:

Common symptoms of Complex Trauma include:

  • Emotional Dysregulation: Mood swings, difficulty managing emotions

  • Negative Self-Perception: Chronic shame, self-blame, or feelings of worthlessness

  • Relational Struggles: Fear of abandonment, difficulty trusting others, toxic relationship patterns

  • Dissociation: Feeling disconnected from emotions, body, or reality

How Trauma Informed Therapy Can Help With Complex Trauma

Complex trauma (C-PTSD) often results from prolonged or repeated traumatic experiences, affecting emotional regulation, relationships, and sense of self. Trauma-informed therapy provides a safe and supportive space to explore past experiences, develop coping strategies, and work toward healing at your own pace.

1. Developing Safety & Stabilization

  • Learning grounding techniques and emotional regulation skills

  • Understanding trauma responses (fight, flight, freeze, fawn) and how they affect daily life

  • Establishing a sense of emotional and psychological safety before deeper trauma work

2. Processing Trauma in a Safe, Titrated Way

  • Practicing relaxation strategies to manage distressing emotions

  • Learning to regulate emotions and reduce hypervigilance

  • Processing traumatic memories in a structured, supportive environment

3. Rebuilding a Sense of Self

  • Strengthening self-esteem and challenging self-blame

  • Developing personal boundaries to support healthier relationships

  • Exploring ways to shift from survival mode to a more fulfilling, empowered mindset
