Play Therapy:
Supporting Emotional Growth Through Creative Expression
Play Therapy is a developmentally appropriate, evidence-informed approach that helps children express thoughts and emotions through play—their most natural language. When children don’t yet have the words to explain how they feel, play provides a safe and meaningful way to process experiences, reduce anxiety, and develop emotional resilience.
At Wellness Counselling Centre, we use a variety of play-based strategies—including art, sand tray, storytelling, and LEGO®-based interventions—to support emotional regulation, social skills, trauma recovery, and healthy development in children and youth.
How Play Therapy Can Help
Play therapy helps children and youth:
-
Express Big Feelings – Like anger, sadness, confusion, fear, or anxiety
-
Develop Emotional Regulation Skills – Learning how to calm, identify emotions, and respond rather than react
-
Process Grief, Trauma, or Family Changes – Including separation, divorce, or loss
-
Strengthen Self-Esteem & Confidence – Building a positive sense of self and capability
-
Improve Social Skills & Communication – Practicing empathy, problem-solving, and cooperation
-
Build Healthy Coping Strategies – Especially in response to stress, school issues, or peer difficulties
Through play, children externalize inner experiences, making them easier to understand, manage, and grow from.
Who Can Benefit from Play Therapy?
Play therapy is helpful for:
-
Children aged 3–12 who are navigating emotional, behavioural, or relational challenges
-
Children with neurodiversity, including ADHD, Autism Spectrum, Sensory Processing differences, and learning variations
-
Children adjusting to grief, trauma, or family transitions, such as divorce, loss, or relocation
-
Kids who struggle with emotional regulation, separation anxiety, or school-related stress
-
Tweens and teens who benefit from non-verbal, hands-on approaches to expression and connection
Play therapy supports children in expressing themselves freely, gaining emotional tools, and feeling understood—regardless of communication style, developmental differences, or diagnosis.
Parent & Child Support Through Play Therapy
We recognize that parents and caregivers play a vital role in a child’s emotional development. At Wellness Counselling Centre, we support the whole family by:
-
Providing regular parent check-ins to share progress and insights from sessions
-
Offering parent coaching to help caregivers respond more effectively to emotional or behavioural challenges
-
Strengthening the parent-child relationship through attachment-informed strategies
-
Supporting parents in building routines, boundaries, and emotional co-regulation skills
-
Helping families navigate neurodiversity, school advocacy, and daily challenges with confidence and compassion
When needed, we may also include dyadic (parent-child) play sessions to help deepen connection, repair ruptures, and increase felt safety between caregiver and child.
What to Expect in Play Therapy Sessions
Each session is tailored to the child’s developmental needs and interests. Our therapists may use:
-
Art-Based Play – Drawing, painting, and creative expression to process emotions
-
Therapeutic Toys & Games – For imaginative play, emotional storytelling, and symbolic processing
-
Sand Tray Therapy – A powerful, non-verbal method where children use miniatures to create stories and express inner worlds
-
LEGO® Therapy – A structured, collaborative approach to building social and communication skills through shared play
-
Storytelling & Puppet Play – Helping children explore themes of identity, emotion, and resilience
-
Sensory & Movement-Based Play – Supporting regulation and body awareness through hands-on, calming activities
Therapy always moves at the child’s pace, ensuring emotional safety, choice, and connection throughout the process.
